The Department of Environmental Engineering was founded on 1 October 1990. Until 14 October 1994 the workplace was called the Department of Ecology, and later the Department of Environmental Protection at the Faculty of Mining and Geology. On 15 October 1994 the workplace was renamed as the Institute of Environmental Engineering having merged the Department of Environmental Protection and the Department of Processing.
The Institute of Environmental Engineering was renamed as the Department of Environmental Engineering on 21 March 2018.
The Department of Environmental Engineering offers educations in selected environmental, technical, and natural science fields. The different study programmes are studied in Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral Programmes both in full-time and combined types of study in Ostrava and Most.
The fields of study in the Bachelor's and Master's Programmes of Study are Environmental Engineering, Water Technology and Water Management, Waste Processing and Disposal (Master's Programme) and Waste Management and Mineral Processing (Bachelor's Programme) . We have a unique Master Programme of Study called the European School for Technical Brownfields Redevelopment. The Department also offers two Doctoral Programmes of Study, namely Environmental Protection in Industry, and Processing.
The lectures and practical instruction in the laboratories are complemented by a number of excursions and field trips.
Students may also study abroad within the mobility options at VŠB-TUO.
The students of the Department of Environmental Engineering have represented the faculty and university at national and international conferences and competitions. Each year they take the leading places in the faculty and international rounds of the Student Research Competition, international Young Researcher Conference in St. Petersburg, national competition of Dr. Radslav Kinský, etc.
